What is Cork Leather Fabric?
Cork fabric, also known as cork leather or cork textile is derived from the bark of cork oak trees. These trees primarily grow in the Mediterranean region of Europe, which produces 80% of the world’s cork, but high-quality cork is now also being grown in China and India.
Cork trees must be at least 25 years old before the bark can be harvested and even then, the harvest can only take place once every 9 years. When done by an expert, harvesting the cork from a cork oak does not harm the tree, on the contrary, the removal of sections of the bark stimulates regeneration which extends the life of a tree. A cork oak will produce cork for between 200 to 500 years.
The cork is harvested from the tree in planks, dried for six months, boiled in water, flattened and pressed into sheets. A fabric backing is then pressed on the cork sheet, which is bonded by suberin, a naturally occurring adhesive present in the cork. The resulting product is flexible, soft and strong and making it one of the most environmentally friendly ‘vegan leather’ available on the market.

What is cork and how is it harvested?
Cork fabric is a sustainable and durable material made by applying thin sheets of natural cork to a fabric backing, most commonly a cotton/polyester blend or polyurethane. This process creates a material that resembles leather but is lighter, more flexible, and vegan. The cork is harvested from the bark of cork oak trees, primarily in the Mediterranean region, and is processed by boiling, drying, and pressing into sheets.
How it's made OF cork fabric:
The initial peeling of cork is referred to as “virgin bark.” This type of bark is rough, uneven, and rich in resin, making it suitable for use in cork insulation panels or granulation. The process of peeling the cork bark from the tree is done manually using specialized cutting axes. It is essential to perform this carefully to avoid damaging the “mother layer.” Both the trunk and the main branches of the tree are de-barked during this process, which takes place in the warm summer months when the bark is easier to remove. Once harvested, the bark is sorted and stacked in storage areas located within the cork oak forests or near the cork factories. The bark is then dried in the open air for at least six months to ensure optimal air circulation. After the drying process, the bark is steamed on stainless steel panels to straighten its naturally rounded shape. This steaming process takes an additional six to nine months.
Cork raw material is stored for a minimum of six months to achieve a uniform and stable moisture content necessary for subsequent processing. After harvesting, cork planks are transported to a yard, where each load is labeled and logged to ensure full traceability back to its source forest—an essential requirement for FSC certification. The planks are then positioned at an angle on stainless steel racks to enhance airflow and prevent microbial growth.
To treat the cork with anti-bacterial properties, it is first boiled. This process enhances the material's elasticity and volume while reducing its density. The boiling water used in this process serves as a natural fertilizer. After the cork cools down and dries for a second time, it must stabilize for about two weeks. This stabilization period allows the humidity to decrease to a level suitable for further processing.
All cork raw material is trimmed into a uniform shape, with edges treated and corners neatly cut. The pieces are then stacked together on pallets. Next, the boards are graded based on appearance, thickness, and porosity. Any defective pieces are sent for grinding and repurposed into other cork products.
